Leaving behind the previous
civilization powered by fossil fuel, mankind is moving towards the era of space
exploration and energy transition centering on electric cars. Nicola Tesla, an
electrical engineer and inventor who Tesla Motors named its company after said
‘energy, frequency, and vibration’ were the key to understanding the secrets of
the universe. The history of science and technology was able to leap forward
thanks to the efforts to overcome spatial and physical limitations caused by
geopolitical location through the development of telecommunication technology,
electricity, and new means of communication.

과학 기술의 역사는 물질과 에너지의 전환과 더불어 지정학적 위치에 의한 공간적‚
물리적 제약을 극복하기 위한 전기와 통신 기술의 발명 및 새로운 커뮤니케이션 매체 개발을 통해 중요한 도약을 이뤄왔다.
Man is expanding his dream and
goal no longer confined to Earth but towards the unknown world through
state-of-the-art technology. After Apollo Mission’s moon-landing project in the
1960s and following the recent launching of SpaceX, humanity is now aiming to
send men to Mars by 2024. Space exploration is meaningful in that it broadens
humanity’s horizon as well as bring about scientific and technological
development. Our ancestors used to project familiar images on stars, moon, and
clouds, and dream about what is above us. Just as how they were able to realize
their dreams, we, who are significantly progressing in space exploration,
continue to imagine and make the unknown come into life through projecting
certain images on the unidentified, such as the one found in space.
첨단 과학기술의 발전을 통해 인류는 이제 지구라는 영역을 넘어 미지의 세계인 우주로 꿈과 목표를 더욱 확장시키고 있으며‚ 1960년대 아폴로 프로젝트에 의한 달 탐사 이후
최근에는스페이스X 등을 통해 화성 탐사가 본격화 되면서 머지않은 시점인 2024년에는 사람을 화성으로 보내는 목표를 세우고 있다.
우주 탐사는 이러한 과학기술 진보의 측면에서 뿐만 아니라 인간 의식의 지평의 확장이라는 측면에서도 큰 의미를 가진다. 과거 인류가 구름‚ 별‚ 달 등에 인간에게 익숙한 이미지를 투영하고 상상하며 하늘을 향한 꿈을 현실화 시켜온 것처럼‚ 화성을 중심으로
우주 탐사 기술이 비약적인 발전을 이루고 있는 지금도 여전히 인간은 우주에서 발견되는
미지의 대상들에 특정 이미지를 투영하고‚ 상상하고‚ 경험되지 않는 것들을 새로운 차원에서 존재하도록 만든다.
Whale Rock—the project’s
name—is a photo of a rock from 2014 NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover which plays as
important evidence that water may have existed on Mars. The directional flows
recorded in the sediments and the dune-like feature are interpreted to have
formed by currents moving towards a lake. And it rises into the sky due to a
geological phenomenon known as crossbedding.
본 프로젝트명인 ‘WhaleRock’은 2014년 NASA 화상탐사선 Curiosity에 의해 촬영된 암석으로‚
과거 화성에 물이 존재했을 것으로 추측되는 중요한 단서이다. 고대 화성에 존재했을 것으로 추정되는 호수로 이동하는 물의 흐름에 의해 형성된 잔물결 형태와 모래 언덕 지형을 가지고 있으며‚ 지질 현상에 의해 교차하며 전체적으로는 하늘로 솟아오른 형상을 하고 있다.
A whale in the ocean and a rock
on Mars. Humans are imagining a whale on what could be their first evidence of
life, water, on Mars. Ocean and space are at an extreme distance from one
another, but they are both areas of the unknown for humans. The metaphor
‘whale’ narrows the distance between the ocean and space and is sent as a photo
of rock through what is transmitted between the Earth and Mars at 400MHz.
Meanwhile on Earth, the communication of humans, whales, and space shares a
commonality in terms of being asynchronous. Tele-presence which goes beyond the
limits of physics opens a new dimension thanks to advanced technology and man’s
imagination. In this project, we explore new media based on asynchronous
communication and a new kind of understanding of the world.
화성에서 물이라는 최초 생명의 실마리를 찾는 과정에서 발견된 돌에 대해 인간의 상상력으로 고래를 떠올렸다는 사실은 매우 흥미롭다. 바다의 고래와 화성의 돌. 바다와 우주는 그 광대한 거리만큼이나 인간에게는 두 극단의 미지의 영역이지만‚ ‘고래’ 라는 일종의 메타포를 통해 존재적 간극이 좁혀진다.
그리고 이러한 메타포는 지구와 화성 간 주고받는 400MHz의 전파를 통해 전송된 돌의
이미지에의해 생성된다. 한편, 지구 아래편 고래의 커뮤니케이션, 인간의 커뮤니케이션,
우주와의커뮤니케이션은 비동시성이라는 측면에서 유사한 방식으로 나타난다. 첨단기술과 인간의 상상력은 새로운 차원에서 물리적 영역을 뛰어넘는 텔레프레즌스(tele-presence)의 가능성을 열어주며, 본 프로젝트에서는
비동시적커뮤니케이션에 기반한 새로운 매체(media)의 가능성과 세계에 대한 새로운 이해 방식을 탐색한다.
